Health check-up of ponies in Matheran finds poor living conditions and ailments
A health camp organized for ponies in Matheran detected use of spiked bits in their mouth (used to control them through pain), forcing sick and injured ones to work, cruelty and unsanitary living conditions. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and Animal Rahat in collaboration with the animal husbandry department Maharashtra had conducted the check-up at the Dasturi Naka area sheds.
Ponies numbering 137 out of total 148 were checked and were provided with medical care and vaccination. Seven persons own the 148 ponies and were represented through their union, Maal
Vahatuk Kalyankari Samajik Sanstha Dasturi Matheran. Four veterinary doctors along with others
conducted their health check-ups.
The 25 page report released last week mentions that the camp was organized to assess the health and
well-being of ponies used to transport goods between Dasturi Naka and Matheran hill station. Many of
the animals endure harsh working conditions, malnutrition and inadequate veterinary care.
The report reveals most of the ponies were found malnourished. They do not get balanced and appropriate food and could be plagued with parasites. Owners do not understand the importance of

deworming and vaccination against tetanus. Wounded equines are worked for work ie 5-6 times a day. 15% of the animals have swelling.
The ponies are suffering from vision, lameness and spiked bits. Even dung disposed near the sheds
expose the ponies to an environment where disease can spread.
The report recommends introduction of eKarts (eTempo) for transportation of goods and rehabilitation
centres for ponies with serious health issues.
The department veterinarian Dr Amol Kamble had participated in the camp. He said, “In August this year, 143 equines were vaccinated by our department.”
The union president Anil Chavan said, “The health camp is an attempt to make reports so that e-Tempo service can be introduced. The animals are in fine health.”
The report points out violation of Draught and Pack Animals Rules-1965, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960, Animal Welfare Board of India advisory and Article 21 (fundamental right to life) of the Constitution of India.
